Drop point

OELCHECK test instrument: Automatic drop point test device
Mettler Toledo DP70
Sample quantity: approx. 5 g
Unit: °C
Test result: temperature at which the lubricating grease liquefies as a result of the disintegration of the soap structure (thickening agent)
Analysis for: lubricating greases
Brief description: The drop point is the temperature at which the lubricating grease liquefies as a result of the disintegration of the soap structure (thickening agent), i.e. when the liquefied grease drop falls through the opening in a nipple onto the bottom of the test tube.
Statement: The drop point is mainly an indicator of quality control for manufacturers. Its significance as a measure of operating temperature limit is minimal, as there is no reliable formula based on which the upper temperature limit can be calculated.
Underlying test standard: IP 396
Deviating methods: ASTM D566, ASTM D2265
