Brief description:

The determination of viscosity is used to describe the flow behavior of liquids. The CINRG - CS-HVA-1 combines 4 temperature control baths into one measuring system. Each bath is set to 40°C or 100 °C and contains 4 measuring stations with capillary viscometers.

The time required for the oil to pass through a specific measuring section is converted into the kinematic viscosity at 40 °C and at 100 °C using the capillary constants. The viscosity values at 40 °C and 100 °C are used to calculate the VI (viscosity index). The higher the VI, the lower the temperature-induced change in viscosity.

Statement:The change in viscosity allows conclusions to be drawn about mixing with other oils, contamination e.g. by fuel or soot, shearing of VI improvers or oil thickening e.g. by oxidation.
Underlying test standard:DIN 51659-3, DIN ISO 2909, ASTM D2270, ASTM D7279
